Reading: The Ultimate Two for One Special

Parents can be great multi-taskers. Educators are really good at multi-tasking, too.

I’ll tell you what that means at Alpha Plus, but first, let’s talk about reading.

Studies show that reading can fundamentally change a student’s trajectory. Kids who fall behind are less likely to graduate high school and more likely to have limited earning potential throughout their lives.

Reading is not just important; it’s vital for student success.

But as classroom time is taken up with an ever-growing list of mandates on teachers and students, reading provides an important but less-discussed opportunity.

Organized thoughtfully, reading gives teachers an opportunity to cover two or more subjects in one lesson.

See, teachers may be the ultimate multi-taskers.

While improving their reading skills, students are also learning about history.

Kids can become better, stronger readers while also learning how to do complex math problems.

Students learning the fundamentals of physical science also stretch their vocabularies and develop their comprehension.

At Alpha Plus, our team takes time to write reading passages specific to Oklahoma. Students learn about our state bird and seismology as they read. They find out about our Native American history, famous Oklahomans and Oklahoma landmarks. They read about our shared history and the men and women who fought to build our great state.

Building other subjects into reading curriculum can maximize classroom time and provide engaging material for students.

Right now, we’re in the process of writing new reading passages for students.

So we want to know – what should we include in our reading passages? What’s your favorite Oklahoma story? Who’s your favorite Oklahoman? What snippet of Oklahoma history should not be missed?
